Numbers on a Line

Overview
A number line orders the real numbers. Numbers to the right are greater; numbers to the left are smaller.
Key ideas
- Graph a number by drawing a dot on the line.
- Use ‘<’ and ‘>’ to compare positions on the line.
- Coordinates are the numbers paired with the points.
Worked examples
Example 1
Problem. Compare −2 and 1.
Solution. −2 < 1 (it lies to the left).
Example 2
Problem. Order: −3, 0, −5, 2.
Solution. −5 < −3 < 0 < 2
