Numbers on a Line

1-8Number Lines

Overview

A number line orders the real numbers. Numbers to the right are greater; numbers to the left are smaller.

Key ideas

  • Graph a number by drawing a dot on the line.
  • Use ‘<’ and ‘>’ to compare positions on the line.
  • Coordinates are the numbers paired with the points.

Worked examples

Solution. −2 < 1 (it lies to the left).

Example 2
